Emergence of "GLOVING" as a dance form at Parties or EDM festivals!!
“You don’t always need feet to dance”, said no one ever- till we educated ourselves with popping, finger tutting and liquiding. Each of these forms are mesmerizing in their own unique way, the effect of which makes one think each finger has a mind of its own. Slowly but surely people started to take to it- at festivals, underground dance battles, parties and concerts too. The hip hop world had finally accepted this beautiful form of dance that expresses using hand only.
A personal take on this, I always preferred hand or finger tutting while performing. Primarily because it was always a bliss watching people dazed and utterly confused trying to fathom the simple yet complex movements of my hands. To get people to enjoy themselves in confusion is an art in itself and to have lights with it adds the element of magic to it. To sum it up, the experience is near nirvana- you have no feeling at all, you’ve already reached another universe maybe? Thus bringing into the picture ‘Gloving’, a dance form that involves elements of hip-hop but with gloves having LED lights at the fingertips. Having said that, very obviously, a combination of complex finger movements along with neon lights makes for a perfect setting at a rave party.
Ravers threw aside glow sticks and mickey- mouse gloves to make way for glovers to entertain them. This dance form normally takes place at very close proximity with viewers, right into their eye, often tossing the minds into a different dimension. For a dance form that brings out and accentuates the movement of hands, what started as a small art stunt by a rookie hip-hop artist has now turned into a million-dollar industry and this “rookie” into a living legend. It has taken the EDM industry by storm, at parties and concerts not because of the effect it has mentally but also because it is breathtakingly beautiful. It fits one’s mind like a jigsaw puzzle causing ravers to almost get hypnotized by the after-effect of lights.
More often than not this dance form has seen itself in troubled waters because if it being misunderstood. What is just a simple finger movement with light has been termed as “an accessory for drugs”. Entertainment hubs like insomniac have banned the performance of gloving at their concerts because they believe it promotes drug abuse. Truth be told, to believe that a dance form can make someone get into substance abuse is nothing short of stupidity. However, gloving is now a rampant rage everywhere and more so, on the rise very quickly. Such art deserves to be seen and experienced more and not be banned.
